When the perfectionist is at their worst they can be judgmental, inflexible, dogmatic, obsessive-compulsive, critical of others, overly serious, controlling, anxious, and jealous.

This brings problems in their lives because they have a tendency to be disappointed with themselves and the people around them when their expectations are not met. The perfectionist will sometimes feel burdened by too much responsibility. They will have times of feeling that whatever they do is never good enough. At times they suffer from feeling that they are not truly appreciated for what they do for people. They will become upset with people in their lives who aren’t trying hard enough. The perfectionist will obsess over what they have done or feel that they should do. Many times this personality will be tense, anxious, and take life way too seriously.

When the Perfectionist Personality is not guided well as a child they can grow up showing tendencies that become known asperfectionism. They will have a lot of self-inflicted stress in their lives and many become severely depressed and sometimes even suicidal. Their need to be perfect becomes imbalanced and can lead to personality disorders. Perfectionism may lead to eating disorders and other mental health issues. There is hope for those who have this personality to begin to see that the perfection that they seek has shifted to a negative tone and has become detrimental to having a happy life.

To stay healthy in your personality it is important for you, the perfectionist, to nurture yourself from time to time, learn to deal with stress and anger, and learn to relax.

Important things to remember:

Take the word “should” out of your vocabulary! Learn to say I want to or I don’t want to instead of saying I should do this or I shouldn’t do that.

Tell yourself it is ok to relax and enjoy life.

Tell yourself that it is perfectly fine to make a mistake. The world will not come to an end. Look at mistakes as a part of the learning process.

Don’t take yourself so seriously. Learn to laugh at yourself.

Believe that you are perfect just the way you are, flaws and all.
